Messiah sing-along

I've wanted to participate in a Handel's Messiah sing-along for years. Today, I finally got the chance. My dad works at a major computer chip producer plant, and out of the goodness of their hearts, they hosted a Messiah sing-along during lunch hour. In a further show of benevolence, they opened it up to members of the community as well.

We all sat in an auditorium with our sheet music and, well, sang along to Handel's Messiah. They had a professional performance of Messiah projected onto a screen at the front of the room so we had a strong lead to follow. There was a dude standing in front of the screen at a lectern, conducting the music, which I thought was a nice touch. Most of the people there sounded like amateurs, like me, but there were a few really talented (and practiced) singers there.

All in all, it was a great time, even if they positively raced through "Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs." As we were driving home, I decided that this was the nerdiest thing I've done in a long time. As my brother put it, out of a huge pool of nerdy people (computer engineers), the most extraordinarily nerdy people rose to the top...and attended the Messiah sing-along.

And I was there, too, and it was great company, and a great time.

I attended a sing along years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Was just wondering the other day where I could find one to attend--never would have thought of a computer chip company. Go nerds!

Are you in Oregon for Christmas? Mom and Dad in the same house?

Sounds festive! Glad you got to do that. :)

Yeah, I guess this post makes more sense if you realize we're in Oregon at my parents' house :).

I have always wanted to do a Messiah sing-along. Um, here's a confession... on Sunday night, on the classical music station, they played The Messiah and I got really excited, pulled out my Messiah song book and sang along. By myself. I'm sure it's a lot more fun with a room full of people.

Here's nerdy for you: When I was in high school, I participated twice in an interfaith choir that performed the Messiah on Temple Hill in Oakland. And several more times I went to their sing-a-long. I love, love, love singing the Messiah!

I sang in a sing-a-long every year in california and tried to find one in Tucson, but it's something like the first monday in december, so I missed it. And, I resent the implication that this is nerdy just because it was put on by nerdy people. In my formative years, we attended at the Ahmenson Theater in Los Angeles, which is very respectable, and not nerdy at all.
