The Hunger Games cast

Apparently they cast a bunch of parts in The Hunger Games movie? And I missed it? I'm sad because now I can't propose my own ideas of actors that would fit the various roles, but whatever.

We've got Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss.
Honestly, she looks very different from the Katniss in my head. I've never seen any of her movies, either, so I have no idea if she at least fits the attitude of the Katniss in my head. I'll just have to wait and see how she does.

Then there's Josh Hutcherson as Peeta.
Well, ok. Maybe they can dye his hair? And maybe he will grow up a little between now and when the movie comes out? Maybe?

Liam Hensworth as Gale.
I hope I hope I hope he's not as Channing Tatum-y as he looks.

Haymitch and President Snow remain un-cast, as far as I can tell, but Effie Trinket is none other than the lovely Elizabeth Banks.
She is fabulous.

It's going to be interesting to see how this movie turns out in areas other than the casting of the principal characters. I'm wondering how they're going to keep it PG-13. At least I'm assuming it's going to be PG-13.

Also, how will the actors - especially Katniss - convey to the audience in the movie theater the complicated layers of plot elements like "I am pretending to be in love with Peeta, but I am actually not, and while I must convince the Capitol's Hunger Games audience with my performance, I must also be able to use said performance to reveal to you, movie theater audience, that this is not how I really feel." GOOD LUCK.

What did The Hunger Games kids look like to you as you read the books? Are you disappointed or thrilled with the casting decisions? Or do you not care?

For my part, I'm rooting for Daniel Craig as President Snow.
Am I right or am I right??

Josh Hutcherson=dissapointment

I didn't finish the book, but man, they got Katniss all wrong. Her features aren't sharp enough for me.

Also (I should finish my thoughts before I push 'publish' for once in my life), I don't think I could take Elizabeth Banks seriously... she is simply Jack Donaghy's girlfriend to me (30 Rock).

I've never seen her on that show! To me, she is Miss Brant in the Spiderman movies, and even better, Lara in The Next Three Days. That last one especially helps me take her seriously.

Do you think they'll dye Peeta's hair blonde? Why is it so important that he be blonde?? I just know that it is.

I actually am really excited about this casting! Can't wait for the movie!

Peeta needs to be blonde for an even more stark contrast between him and Gale. That is how I feel about it. I hate when two characters I don't know well look too much alike and I get confused between the two.

For some reason, President Snow was a small, white-haired, older man to me. But I could get behind Daniel Craig.

Good point about the hair color. Speaking of which, just dye Daniel Craig's hair white. I remember thinking he was old, too, but the second time I read the books I don't recall there being anything specific about HOW old he was. I guess at the end it mentions a granddaughter. Still, DANIEL CRAIG.

I'm ALWAYS rooting for Daniel Craig ;-)

And I actually don't agree with you about hoping the Peeta guy will grow up a little. I think it's important in the movie that they LOOK young - since it IS a book about a deathmatch between children, and if we have actors in their 20s....blah. I'm very worried about the Katniss casting for that very reason. It's key to me that these are KIDS. I know Peeta's character was mature beyond his years, but he IS just a 16 year old boy in the first book. Think about the boys in your ward (maybe your old ward) blessing the Sacrament. BABIES.

I just the read the books (I'm a little behind the times) so this is all very fresh in my mind. First of all, I'm a little disappointed in the choice for Katniss, but I'm hoping I'll feel better about her if they dye her hair dark. I know that the books definitely mention that she has dark hair, and, I'm fairly certain I remember something about all kids from the Seem having dark hair and kids from the town (like Peeta) having blonde hair. So really, I think it would be a big misstep to not dye both Katniss' and Peeta's hair.

I also hope that Katniss girl looks a little more broody than her head shot (though not as broody and awkward as whats-her-face from Twilight). I'll have a hard time with her if she seems all chipper all the time.

As for President Snow, I pictured him both old and grandfatherly looking, but in a deceptive way. You know, someone who looks kind and caring, but is really evil underneath it all. But maybe that's just me.

OK, I'm done overtaking your comments section now.

I'm not familiar with any of these actors, but the Peeta character looks just like I imagined him--Mr. Goody Two-Shoes. I think you need someone more evil than Daniel Craig for President Snow. I can't think who though . . .

The kid playing Gale should be playing Peeta and the kid playing That Peeta kid looks like he hasn't even hit puberty. I thought Katniss was all small, nimble and brunette not busty and blonde? That chick looks like she has 10 years on the Peeta kid. She wouldn't bother me as much if it weren't for the lame Peeta casting. Boo. I hate how they can't get it right. But you know what, as long as they can all act, I'll be okay. I think that was my biggest disappointment with the Twilight movies. All the terrible, horrible, atrocious acting. It was physically painful for me to watch the first movie. Shudder.

Hi Bridget, I'm Liz Johnson's friend back for more Hunger Games discussion. Hope you don't mind. :) I've been following this casting info as well, and some of the casting choices are spot on for me. (Like Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane, Amandla Stenberg as Rue, and Hopefully Woody Harrelson as Haymitch- though that one is still unconfirmed.) The casting of the 3 leads made me a little nervous at first, but I'm warming up to it. At least it sounds like Jennifer Lawrence can act, since she was nominated for an Oscar. Fingers crossed that it turns out well! (I get my info from

And I am totally with you on Daniel Craig.

Oh, and it may be too late to propose your own ideas of which actors would fit various roles for the first movie, but they still have to cast the second and third movies... so, how about posting your casting ideas for Finnick, Johanna, Pres. Coin, etc?

Sorry for hijacking your comments section. I just can't help myself when it comes to casting-talk. :)

Did you hear that they cast Lenny Kravitz as Cinna?

Bridget said...

Liz, WHAAAA? We'll see how that turns out.

Melissa, Haymitch/Woody Harrelson sounds like it could be awesome or really terrible.

I realize this post is 10 months old, but I just need to let you know that I really wish they could cast Mr. Burns from "The Simpsons" as President Snow. I've only read the first chapter from "Catching Fire" and he's immediately who came to mind.
