I fell down the stairs today

Sunday/Monday/Tuesday are my super busy days this semester. This morning I had breakfast, and then I didn't get a chance to eat again until 3.38pm, when I was able to allot exactly 7 minutes for some food before leaving for a meeting (and then class until 8pm). However, at 3.37pm, Magdalena peed on the couch. There went my eating time.

So I spent 7 minutes cleaning up pee instead of eating, and packed up a dinner to take with me to the meeting, where I didn't get a chance to discreetly eat it. The meeting was still going at 4.56, but I had to leave to get to class down four flights of stairs and across campus by 5 o'clock. As I ran down the stairs in high heels, my arms were full of two textbooks, my notebook, my (uneaten) sack dinner, two folders, and my purse. So it was an extra spectacular sight when I TOTALLY FELL DOWN THE STAIRS, going from the Mezzanine to the Ground floor. It wasn't even like I slipped gracefully onto my bum. I stumbled and fell forward onto my face, because my arms were so full that I couldn't catch myself. At the end of the fall, my head and torso were located on lower stairs than my feet. It was not pretty.

And I swear to you that nobody ever takes this staircase. It's almost always deserted. The building is five stories tall so most people just say what the heck, I'll take the elevator. But on this occasion, when I fell down the stairs as a full-grown adult, there happened to be two guys right behind me. Of course. They ran over and gathered my things and assisted me to my feet and so help me, I could not even look them in the face, I was so embarrassed. It must have looked pretty bad because they wanted me to sit down for a while. I mumbled something about being late (which was true) and hobbled off to class.

My right shin and left knee hurt so much. I can't wait until the bruises show up tomorrow. At this point I've moved beyond mortification and on to laughing at myself, but I still get a little horrified chill every time I think of what it would have been like if I had been wearing a skirt today. Yikes.

(And for the record, I got to eat my (cold) sack dinner at 6.30 during the class break. Woohoo!)

I want to check and see if we can get a security video of this. YouTube!

oh gosh! sounds painful. When my brother was on his mission in Portugal, he completely biffed a step at the top of a (couple hundred year old, stone, wet because it was raining) staircase and rolled all the way down. It was bad. But somehow he was basically uninjured. He went to a doctor to get checked out, and all he had was a sprained ankle.

Bridget, you do such a good job of describing the fall that you had my laughing out loud...sorry! I bet you were sore the next day. I've slipped down the stairs before and what your body naturally does to try to save yourself, can make for some VERY sore muscles the next day! I hope you weren't hurt too bad, even though I'm sure your pride was hurt quite a bit! :)

Oh, OUCH. I am so sorry. Reminds me of when I did the face plant while out hiking last summer. How wonderful that the two men were there to pick you and your things up. So, so sorry.

I am SO sorry. That is so terrible (and yet so funny... sorry, your vivid description made me laugh). When I broke my leg in high school, I was heading down the stairs (on my crutches) during class, when nobody should be in the hall. Of course, I biffed it the last five steps, and fell right in front of the guy that I had been in love with FOR YEARS and the girl who I always wanted to be friends with (but she was far too cool for me). It was awful. So mortifying. I feel your pain!

I know this is no nearly as bad...but I somewhat tripped while going up the stairs on my first day of middle school and some 9th grade boys said, "tripping up the stairs, eh?" I wanted to die!

Wow, I'm glad others have fallen down (or UP, Trina) the stairs in their adulthood. I don't think I ever had until yesterday.

And yes, Katie, I don't remember hurting my arm but it is sore today. I must have tried to catch myself even with all the hud in my arms.

Oweee. You're fortunate not to have cracked your head open. Or broken something. I fell down the stairs head first in the privacy of my own home thankfully with no witnesses about. Was on crutches at the time and miscalculated a step.

I am so sorry for your pain and humiliation, but THANK YOU for sharing it. :) Be forever grateful it was a pants-wearing-day.

I'm with your mom! The fact that you made it out of this experience without cracking your head open or impaling yourself on a pen, well that is amazing. I've fallen down exactly three times in my life although all three were on my back. Once in front of my entire seminary class. As if high school isn't awkward enough. Once, just like Liz, in front of the boy I'd been in love with for years and I smacked down so hard on my backpack it took me a few minutes to get the breathe to stand up. Once walking between the Benson and the Marb with a boy I totally had a crush on. As I went down my arms instinctually reached out and grabbed him rather awkwardly around the waist, taking him down with me. So embarrassing. Honestly I would have taken breaking something alone or bruising my body and ego in front of people :)

I am glad you are ok. That could have been bad!)

I hope everything is getting better. I slipped and wrenched my knee. I thought I would be able to stretch it and make better by myself, so it took me three weeks to finally get it checked out. Bad move since it just got way worse.

Let us know how you are doing!

I fall all the time. Nbd. Downstairs, upstairs, in public, in front of my new boyfriend (he married me anyway), on the first day of college. I even fell once while carrying my dog, which makes me scared for when I have kids. (She was fine. Me, not so much. I literally fell on my face and got a nasty rug burn/fat lip.)
