August 10th, outsourced

In my review of Nothing to Envy, I mentioned the disappearance of my friend and former co-worker, David Sneddon. Fortunately, there is some tentative good news to report these days.

I loved this analysis of why "actually" is the worst word on the planet.

Thanks to Ariana, I enjoyed reading through this list of impressions of America from foreigners.

You will probably watch this a few times. And then call your kids over to see it. And then take a look at the long jump and swimming videos as well. [HT Jen]

I will miss these GIF guides: how Aly Raisman won.

Jeremy went crazy on buzzfeed the other night and forwarded me a bunch of gems that had me annoying my family with my attempts to laugh discreetly (I failed). First, some fun stuff about Nicolas Cage.

Then, 50 people you wish you knew in real life. You've probably seen some of these pictures elsewhere but it's a lovely commentary on the human race that someone has put them all together. And WOW, 10, 43, and 44.

DID YOU SEE THIS? It's only the most amazing men's gymnastics routine EVER.

You know, as much as I love McKayla Maroney and her perfect perfect vault...I kind of love Aliya Mustafina more. Because she's just a little bit evil.

Great articles. I haven't checked out all of them, but saw the ones about the gymnasts. I noticed the US team all were dark this year - beautiful dark eyes and hair. I was looking for some fair-haired ones or blue eyes. Maybe I missed them. They were stunning. I love McKayla's eyes, and Aly is just so pretty. Anyway...I noted Aliya Mustafina's name as "sounded Muslimish" so I had to look up her background.

I liked this part:

"In other words, to a Russian audience Mustafina’s name marks her as an Olympic anomaly, as rare as Team USA's Gabby Douglas’s gold medal win is to an American audience."

I deleted my comment because it's late at night and I totally misread what your article ACTUALLY said. Sorry. I will hush now.

Yes, as soon as Jeremy and I saw her name, we figured she was probably Muslim. We thought Chechen but it looks like Tatar?

That's crazy about David Sneddon. I really, really hope he's ok and that he gets out soon. I really need to read "Nothing to Envy," because N. Korea is completely baffling to me. I can't get over the fact that the US appears to know very little about the place, including the definitive marital status of its president (granted, I think we know now, but that took forever to confirm). Weird weird.

I am also a big Aliya Mustafina fan. I loved the commentary about her "difficult" personality during all of her routines. Hahahahahaha.

That Nicholas Cage post is going to give me nightmares.
