CAPTCHA!!!

Funny Captcha
I was trying to comment on my brother's blog just now. Unfortunately, he has enabled that horrible CAPTCHA word-verification feature on the comments. For some reason, the image of the CAPTCHA letters/numbers didn't load, and since I didn't feel like re-loading the page, I just clicked on the option to have an "audio CAPTCHA" read to me.

YOU GUYS. Have you ever heard one of these audio CAPTCHAs???

I'll stick to the visual ones from now on, thanks. Because, SCARY.

This brings me to my point: would y'all consider taking those word verifications off of your blog comments? If you have purposely enabled them, why? I sometimes get spam comments, too, but Blogger automatically takes care of most of them for me. I've turned on moderation for comments on posts older than 14 days, which takes care of the rest. The thing is, even though the literal, stated point of a CAPTCHA is to tell Computers and Humans Apart, I often have to go through two or three or four rounds of CAPTCHA images to pass the test. Anyone else? Those things are dang hard.

Sometimes the letters/fonts are so distorted that it's really difficult to figure them out. I get them wrong many times, too!
I don't get the point of the audio. First of all, it's really creepy (thanks).
Secondly, are we, humans, really supposed to decipher what it's saying??
I don't get it.

Yes, we're really supposed to be able to tell what it's saying!

Yeah we got spam with the captcha and we got spam without it. Lets just all lose them.

AGREED. I hate those things! They take me forever, and if I'm trying to comment on a mobile device and a Captcha is required, I just don't comment, because it's such a pain in the rear.

Those things are SO annoying.

The Captcha are just one hurdle to commenting. For me, the other is that Jen and I have a family google account that is the center of our online world which defaults to her name/image. If I want to leave a comment under my own identity, I've got to log out/log in. Simple, but a hassle. So many potential comments from me go unsaid.

And yet, look. I logged out, and logged back in JUST to say this.

I hate Captcha as well. Super annoying when I'm on my iphone trying to make comments. I'd say half the time I just say screw it and give up. The sad thing is I actually think Captcha is kind of amazing. I saw a program on it once where they introduced the dude that invented it. Super nerdy guy but kind of amazing. He wanted a way to protect things but he also came up with a way for people to decipher all types of old text that couldn't just be scanned in and put into a word program. Anyway kind of amazing...most definitely annoying :)

Either Captcha needs to compromise or we'll have to break up. Just quit distorting and blurring them like Dali gone bad.

They used to not be so bad, but the last couple of months they have seemed worse. I tried 5 or 6 times to write a comment on a friend's blog the other day. I finally succeeded. I have often appreciated that you allow comments easily.

I hate captcha, but I hate spam more. I always go back and forth, but as soon as I remove it, I immediately start getting spam notifications. 20+ a day sometimes. So I captcha it up. I'm not worried about deterred commenters. I've never placed a lot of stock in comment quantity.

Hahahaha. This made me laugh so much. Why do they sound like that???? I had no idea that I enabled that, either. I'll try to figure out how to take it off now...

I think what's more annoying, though, are blogs or websites that start playing music or videos automatically. I have to figure out which tab it's coming from, and close that tab or turn off the volume or find out where it's coming from and pause it.

1. I am pretty sure that is a recording of aliens talking.

2. I SO AGREE!

That may be the creepiest thing I have ever heard! And, I have no idea what it said. Also, I just went and checked my settings and found out that I had word verification turned on - I have now turned it off.

Bridget said...

A lot of people who have it turned on probably don't know, because I'm pretty sure it's Blogger's default. See, for example, Amber below. AND Glenda, above - Crys, did you know you have verification for comments turned on??

Linda said...

I know! I find myself squinting and wondering what those letters are...and reload several times to get to one I think I can decipher! Sometimes, those almost make posting too much work!

The music bugs me too. It comes on so loud that it startles me, and I can't get rid of it fast enough.

Aaaand I just looked and noticed that the blog I'm writing on this month has Captcha enabled. Annoying defaults.

(Note: for this one, I didn't log out then log in just to change my face.)

Bridget, I have long appreciated that you do not have Captcha enabled on your comments.

Crys said...

Haha I had no idea :). Shows about how often I pay attention to the blog :)

Bridget said...

Well, you wouldn't know, since the author of a blog can skip the verifications. :)

The situation has since been rectified...at least I think it has :)
