Family recycling fun

Since we are renting a place and since we live upstairs from our landlady, technically I could have handed all our recycling over to her to deal with. But there was quite a lot of it (remember, you can't throw hardly anything away in Germany!), and I wanted the cultural experience of taking it to the recycling depot myself. Luckily, I had two little helpers who were especially keen to go with me when they heard that kids can get a lollipop from the workers there.

And it was like Family Fun Day at the recycling depot! There were lots of kids there, helping their parents by sorting out colored glass and stomping on cardboard boxes to collapse them. Everyone was in a good mood and cheery to everyone else because we knew we were all helping out the environment. The girls had a blast tossing things in the correct bins and the worker ladies were so nice to tell us where everything went. It would have been so easy for them to do a quick "hmm, foreigner, let's just cut our losses and do it all for her," but instead they took the time to show me how to do it myself.

It was such a good time in such a weirdly wholesome way. If we lived here, I think Recycling Saturdays would become one of the most anticipated days of the week for the girls. And maybe for me, too!

What a great thing that the philosophy at the center seems to be education and fulfillment. If they can get people to develop the good habit of recycling, and make them feel good about it, that's success.

That is so awesome!

Side note - I hopped onto your blog and saw that it was RAINING in your weather box. And I flipped out, because it's NEVER raining in Sharjah!!!

And then I saw that you had changed it to Vilseck. Womp womp. I was so hoping that it was raining in Sharjah. Sigh. Oh well.

I hope you continue to love your trip!
